Asociace JIS se zabývá průmyslovými a minerálními produkty srovnatelnými s normami zaváděnými různými průmyslovými asociacemi za účelem řešení konkrétních problémů, či s normami, které zavádí a používají samotné společnosti (provozní příručky, produktové specifikace, atd.). Potřeba společného postupu ve společnostech jednoho průmyslového sektoru vede k zavádění společných průmyslových norem a ta samá potřeba ve smyslu většího rozšíření vedla i k zavedení asociace JIS.
